On my second trip to Poland in 1992, I toured with Polish guitar-giant Jarek Smietana and met pianist Joachim Mencel at the first gig at Pod Filarami in Gorzowie. This was the beginning of our duo. Joachim and I did lots of school programs and concerts in Poland. We've played concerts from Moscow to Maine with multiple stops in between ever since.
With lots of help, I was able to sponsor Joachim to visit here with his family in August 2006. A major ‘perk’ was Charlie Lane’s offer to record us in his magnificent studio at Fort Andross. The studio's 9' Steinway Hamburg Concert Grand (in the 50/$60,000 range!) was autographed inside by various famous piano players including Van Cliburn! Charlie kept it in a hermetically sealed air-conditioned closet and only wheeled it out and tuned just before a concert.
By 2006 our duo had evolved to the point we started concerts just playing tunes with no rehearsal or planned program. 'Live in Fort Andross' was recorded at Charlie's Maine Sound Stage on August 19, 2006 (obviously all ‘first takes’). This beautifully recorded CD captures the first hour of that concert just the way it happened. About 100 lucky people in the studio audience took home a souvenir copy of the CD.
