about

“Duo” 1985 - Living Room Records catalog # 195004
Brad Terry, clarinet and John Basile, guitar

“In 1989 John & I won the Hennessy Cognac Jazz Search competition in NYC. John submitted tunes from this CD “Duo” and voila! Out of 600 contestants we were the first duo to ever apply, beating out Darius Brubeck for first place on the East Coast. We were showcased at the IAJE conference on Long Island in 1990. We did get a free trip to LA but did not win in the finals.

John had been to Maine years before, doing school programs with “Friends of Jazz” playing with Steve Grover and me. Duo gigs followed in Maine and New York City.

I've just been in touch with John about adding this CD on Bandcamp. He agreed it holds up pretty well but mentioned he’d like to try re-recording some of these tunes again, now 33 years later. I don’t remember if there was any planning for this CD. The recordings were mostly first takes. We’re hoping to get together soon and record some music at John's.”
